Donner Summit

Why the title? I have lived about an hour's drive from Donner Summit for the past twenty years. During the 80s and into the 90s we would often stop, when embarking or returning from family vacations, and take a family snapshot or two at the Donner Lake Overlook off old Highway 40. Especially during the 80s this site also became a popular graffiti site. Admittedly, I found an intriguing juxtaposition between the historical context of the setting and its current recreational opportunitiesnot to mention the ease of passage. The painting was an attempt to combine aspects of two of these photos:   one I used simply for its plain, three-tier, monochrome background. The other contained a favorite piece of graffiti garnered through the many years and visits. In the alternative digital versions I have been able to reincorporate the photos and aspects of the photos into the painting. |
